The teenager was charged after a weekend of violence, crime and major incidents that kept police officers extremely busy. “Various serious crimes and large-scale public demonstrations have kept the VPD weak all weekend,” said the Vancouver police sergeant. Steve Addison in a statement. “Our officers responded to multiple stabbings and unprovoked attacks, investigated the third homicide of the year, tackled the bomb terror and provided extensive traffic support along the 42-kilometer BMO Vancouver Marathon.” An update on the search for the juvenile offender and other crimes was expected Monday afternoon. The 15-year-old from East Vancouver was arrested on Saturday night after three people attacked the sea wall near the Olympic Village. He lost, but a 45-year-old suspect was arrested nearby and charged with assault with a weapon and disorderly conduct. A 31-year-old woman walking near West Pender and Homer Streets at 1 a.m. Monday suffered facial injuries when she was robbed by a woman holding a broken bottle. A 38-year-old man was shot in the leg with a makeshift flash gun near Maine and Hastings on Sunday afternoon. A 47-year-old woman who was suspected of the attack took off with her accomplice before the police managed to arrest her. Police were called to a social housing building in Strathcona on Saturday night after a 33-year-old man was stabbed in the arm by a neighbor during a fight. The victim was treated for stitches and the suspect was arrested and then released. The couple started fighting two days later and the suspect for the original knife stabbed himself. The original victim was then arrested for assault and taken to prison. “This level of violence in a single weekend is alarming, especially when incidents include attacks on strangers and weapons such as knives, bear spray and other improvised weapons,” said Addison. He noted that violent crime rose 7.1 percent in Vancouver last year from pre-pandemic levels. Anyone who sees such incidents or is a victim of violent crime should call 911 immediately.
