A new poll shows Republicans ahead of this year’s midterm elections, among other groups traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party. Asked which party they were likely to vote for in their constituency, 52% of Latino voters said they would choose a Republican compared to 39% who said they preferred a Democrat, according to a new NPR and Marist poll. Democrats also follow among voters under the age of 45, with 50% saying they would choose a Republican compared to 40% who said they planned to vote for a Democrat. Scott Applewhite) BIDEN APPROVAL RATINGS FALL INTO FEARS OF WAR AND INFLATION IN A NEW PUBLIC POLL Latins have traditionally preferred to vote for Democrats, but recent evidence suggests the group has begun to distance itself from the party in recent years. Younger voters are also traditionally pro-Democrat, with 55% of 30-49 year olds supporting President Biden in 2020 and 59% of 18-29 year olds voting in favor of Biden. Republicans also enjoy a lead among independent voters, with 45% saying they would vote for a Republican compared to 38% saying they would support a Democrat. But both groups could help the GOP win in 2022, with 47% of voters voting in favor of a Republican nominee compared to 44% saying they would support a Democrat. Democrats have historically outperformed Republicans in a congressional vote, the first time the GOP has led the poll since gaining control of both the House and Senate in 2014. A few-point lead could cause trouble for Democrats, who are now down three points six months before the election. Of those who disapprove, 37% said they strongly disapprove of Biden’s performance. Economic issues are leading voters to Republicans, with 42% of voters saying they think the GOP would do a better job with the economy than 26% who think Democrats are better equipped to handle the issue. Voters also favor Republicans on inflation, with 41% saying they trust the GOP more in controlling inflation than the 20% who said Democrats would be better off. The poll was conducted between April 19 and 26, with a survey of 1,377 adults with an error margin of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
