We ask you to stay away from the Airport and avoid walking on the ice of the river for photos. Fire Chief Everitt took these and they cover them. Barriers and signs have been put up and Regulatory Services will be on site overnight. More: pic.twitter.com/2CHWjvJ3wc

The Robert Service Way and Millennium Trail and Airport Trail near downtown Whitehorse are temporarily closed due to an apparent landslide on the cliff around 3:00 p.m. Saturday’s.
Derek Johnstone, a transportation supervisor for Whitehorse Township, says the area around the slide is unstable due to ice beneath the melting mud due to higher temperatures.
“The water that came down caused one of the areas to slip along the road and just came out of the Millennium Trail,” he said.
The Municipality is asking people to avoid this area until the mud, rocks and trees are removed and the road and paths can be reopened safely. (Submitted by Yukon Emergency Medical Services)
Road and road closures include the area from the Robert Service Way, from the roundabout to the Miles Canyon Road near the Yukon Energy Corporation. The affected areas of the Millennium Trail and Airport Trail are also closed.

“From what I can see here, it’s basically just the guardrail. There was part of the railroad infrastructure that was also dug up,” says Johnstone.
Johnstone says the road is likely to be closed to both pedestrians and pedestrians until all materials are removed and city crews can assess the situation.
Alternative routes are being planned to transport students and the city says the Standard Bus has been updated.
He says no one was injured, however, there were few vehicles and pedestrians nearby.
“I heard an explosion – a very loud noise”
Teresa Earle was heading south right near the eagle’s nest on the Robert Service Way when she heard a “boom, a very loud noise.” “I saw him coming down to me and then he looked in my mirror,” he says. Earle says she immediately pulled over to the side of the road and called 911. “I was the first to call. I was on the phone with the 911 and then another even bigger slide came down at the same spot,” he says. Earle says immediately after her call, the Emergency Response Center and law enforcement officers appeared on the scene. “It’s time to appreciate all the public service people who have taken action,” he said. Whitehorse resident Lenore Morris said she went for a bike ride on Miles Canyon Road, “when I came back the slide had happened”. (Submitted by Lenore Morris)
The city demands attention
Johnstone says this is the first time he can remember a slide – which the city referred to as mud – of this size.
“It started to happen last year with the snow we had last year. And it’s not just this area,” he says.
Johnstone says the unstable area stretches along the entire clay bank. He says residents should be careful when using the paths on the clay rocks.
“I would watch when you walk to make sure,” he says.
City officials are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as soon as they become available.
