“We believe … that the victim, who is dead, was actively involved in the incident reported in connection with the shootings,” he said. “I will not reveal the name or the service to which the officer is associated. “This is something that will come out … at a later date.” Dozens of law enforcement officers from various services responded to Mississippi showrooms late Saturday night after gunmen opened fire on the event near the Mississippi Trade Mart around 10 p.m. At least six people were shot, including the dead man. Update: Six confirmed shots including the unknown dead man at the scene. Other victims appear to be stable at this time and do not appear to be directly involved in the shooting or the circumstances that led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing. – TyreeJonesSheriff (@TyreeSheriff) May 1, 2022 Four people were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment. Jones said in a tweet early Sunday morning that all the victims “appear to be stable at this time and do not appear to be directly involved in the shooting or the circumstances that led to the shooting.” “We are still checking other hospitals to see if other people were shot and transported in private vehicles to other hospitals,” he said. Jones spoke to the press around midnight in front of the Oyo Hotel building. He was not sure what led to the shooting and said more details would likely be released during the investigation. “There was an exchange of gunfire between at least two to three people in and around (one) vehicle at this location. “During the exchange, at least one of these individuals fired multiple shots, multiple shots, in the middle of the street of the ongoing event,” he said. “We do not believe anyone else was injured in the middle of the road during these shootings.” The roads were closed shortly after the shooting and the spectators were forced to leave. The entrance and exit points leading to the exhibition space were finally closed to the public. “Law enforcement was on the scene. “They responded and at some point managed to arrest at least two people along with at least one vehicle at the moment we believe are also involved in this incident,” Jones said. Two rifles, a pistol and “large caliber rifles of different caliber” were also found. During the investigation, the sheriff said that it was found that a law enforcement officer also opened fire, shooting and killing one of the possible shooters. Jones said those arrested were minors. “It is very destructive and tragic,” he said. “This should be considered a family event, for families from all walks of life to come to a common location to enjoy fun and enjoy food … You have the reckless behavior of people who do not respect the lives and safety of those present at the event and I think it is a very (cowardly) and selfish act “. The sheriff was unsure if the event would continue on Sunday, telling the media that it would depend on the event organizers and the Mississippi State Exhibition Committee. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist in the case. Jones urges anyone with additional information to contact local law enforcement. “We will find out exactly what happened,” he said. “We will find out who is all involved and they will have to answer for this very reckless incident that happened here tonight.” Want more WLBT news in your inbox?
