Gausman scored 10 and allowed two straight seven-pointers as the Toronto Blue Jays held the Houston Astros 3-2 at the Rogers Center. The victory gave Toronto a 4-2 record in the regular season against Houston, the defending champion of the American League.
“I almost felt like a game after the season,” said Gausman, who noted that the Astros’s roster remains largely unchanged from last year’s World Series. “The amount of adrenaline you have in every stadium you know, you have to be very good.”
Gausman was more than fine this year.
Sunday’s victory made Gausman the only pitcher after Cy Young (1906) to start a season with five consecutive starts and at least 20 innings without allowing a walk or home run. No other pitcher has achieved this feat since the 1903 World Series began.
“I’m not trying to walk children, I’re just throwing pitches,” said Gausman (2-1). “Obviously, it’s nice. But I have another start in five days, you know?
“This game was not the last game of the season. We are not the last yet. So, next time.”
Bo Bichette with two consecutive hostages in the sixth was the first blow of the match for Toronto (15-8), breaking an offer without a blow to his main Astros Framber Valdez. Gaussmann said his teammates were trying to trick Valdez into the boat, but Bisset insisted he was focused on scoring a streak with the Blue Jays relegating 1-0.
“I’m just interested in winning or losing, so for me it had nothing to do with saying no,” Bichette said. “I just go out there trying to be good on the bat to win the game for my team.”
Toronto won six series and tied another to start the 2022 season. The Blue Jays won two series each against Houston and Boston, took sets from Texas and Auckland and split one in New York against the Yankees.
“Not only that, but we play with the best baseball teams and we have beaten them,” said Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo. “This is a great faith for our stadiums, the excellent work from our defense and, of course, our timely strike.”
Santiago Espinal’s single RBI in the seventh brought home the winning streak for Toronto. Tim Mayza finished eighth without a score for the Blue Jays before Jordan Romano won his top 11 save in the Major League of the season.
Valdez (1-2) allowed three straight with just two hits and two walks for Houston, scoring two over 6 1/3 innings. Phil Mathon and Hector Nerris were both relieved.
Niko Goodrum and Aledmys Diaz led a series for Houston (11-11) with doubles and singles, respectively.
Draw 2-2 at the bottom of the seventh, Espinal came to the plate with an out and runners first and second.
Espinal hit one only to the deep left field with Alvarez coming in to shoot as Matt Chapman was third. The Blue Jays’ third key player slipped first into the net, winning the throw for Toronto 3-2.
Romano caused a pop fly to the shallow right to start the ninth before Kyle Tucker doubled. The Blue Jays then came closer to Alex Bregman, who hit the sting, to get out to diver George Springer in the right field.
The 31,802 in front of the Rogers Center were already on their feet as Romano hit Goodrum to finish the game.
IN DESTRUCTION – Ross Stripling (0-0) will take the embankment for the Blue Jays on Monday, as Toronto hosts the New York Yankees in a crucial game of the American Eastern League. Jordan Montgomery (0-1) will get the start for the Yankees. New York tops the AL East rankings after a month, with Toronto second.
BOUNCE BACK – The Blue Jays have not lost consecutive games since September 24th. The current series of 30 games without consecutive defeats is the largest active series in Major League Baseball. The largest such Toronto series in the history of the team is 45 games, from August 30, 1992 to April 20, 1993.
CHOICE – After the game the Blue Jays selected infielder Gosuke Katoh and right pitcher Bowden Francis in the triple-A Buffalo. The Bisons are on leave Monday, but moves could be to make room on the Toronto roster if left-handed pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu (fork), outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (sideways) or catcher Danny Jansen (sideways) are ready to detach from the injured. list.
