Quebec County police are warning people in Madeleine-Center to stay home after a polar bear was spotted in the area. Located on the Gaspé Peninsula, the town is less than 300 miles north of the New Brunswick border and is separated from the northern part of Quebec by more than 100 miles of water. Police spokesman Sgt. Stéphane Tremblay says a citizen reported the polar bear to wildlife officials who asked police to ensure public safety until they arrived. Tremblay says maintenance officers arrived and took over the situation before 2 a.m. Saturday. The county’s Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks says it can not yet confirm whether the animal found is actually a polar bear. Polar bears have occasionally been spotted off the coast of Quebec’s Lower North Coast – about 500 miles (500 km) north of Madeleine Center.
