George grew up in the village of Malona, on the island of Rhodes, Greece. He married Hariklia (Harriet) Zanetto in 1957 and the two left the island a year later, traveling to Canada where they built their home in Sault Ste. Mary. George worked at Algoma Steel and retired in 1990 after 30 years of service. He spent many hours working in his carpentry shop and enjoyed sharing his talent with many of his friends and family who received his handicrafts. He also enjoyed puzzles, coffee with friends and was active in the Greek community and church. Beloved husband and best friend of Harriet, beloved father of Milton (Carol Yanisch) and Maria (Boris) Vahrusev and grandson Nikolas Vahrusev. Brother of Eva Koukoula, Manolis Papageorgiou, brother-in-law of Stella (late Giannis) Sassos, Efi (Tony) Antonas, uncle of Maria Sassos, Tsampikoula (Nick) Kiekkas, and Anthe Zanettos, Pavlos Christofakis, George Christofakis Z. George will be missed by many cousins, relatives and friends in Canada, Greece and the USA Deceased by parents Miltiadis and Kyriakoula Papageorgiou, fathers-in-law George and Maria Zanetto, sister Chrysanthi Louis and brother-in-law Steve Zanetto. The family would like to thank the well-groomed doctors, nurses and hospital staff for George’s wonderful care in his last days. A private funeral was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Mary, followed by burial in the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulcher. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Mary in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
