Mesnes Street in Wigan has been closed as a result, between Northway and Standishgate. Police said a cordon had been set up and “special officers” were at the scene.
Police said officers received reports at 10.40am. today – Sunday – that a suspicious grenade containing the furniture was donated to a charity shop.

The GMP said the investigation was ongoing but did not believe there was any “malicious intent”.
In a statement, GMP Wigan said: “Around 10.40 a.m. Today (Sunday, May 1, 2022), we received a report of a suspicious grenade containing furniture donated to a charity shop on Mesnes Street in Wigan.
“They are taking special officers, a precautionary measure has been put in place.

“Investigations are ongoing, but at this stage, no malicious intent is believed.”
It seems that the fire brigade is also present.
