Fire crews confirmed they arrived at the scene on Argyle Street at 10.50am on Sunday morning. Five fire engines and 26 firefighters are still battling the blaze. A stairwell platform is also used by firefighters to reach the fire and try to put out the flames. The burning property is a dilapidated former factory. Dark gray smoke can be seen all over the city up to Heaton, Walker and Jarrow. Fire and Rescue Service Tyne and Wear urged locals to keep their windows and doors closed. Our reporter and photographer are now heading to the area. We will bring you the latest on stage.
