Lawlor said the city received a total of 204 applications, 134 of which were fully completed and eligible. However, the city does not take possession of a hen lightly. Lawlor noted that residents who wanted to add hens to their households had to go through various steps before participating in the draw. “We asked for a site plan and housing details and we also asked them to complete some training on raising and caring for the chickens,” he said. “This is very important, that’s why they knew how to take care of the hens, what to do if they are sick, how to make sure the hens are built in a way that prevents the predators from accessing and ensures that they do not disturb the community.” Trending Stories

Lawlor added that residents receiving these permits need to take specific steps to properly care for their newest additions, including ensuring their hens have a coop, adequate heat source, adequate ventilation and outdoor running. As for what residents can do with their chickens, Lawlor said people are encouraged to enjoy the privileges of owning these yard animals, including harvesting and selling their eggs. “If people choose to give or sell their eggs, they just have to make sure they follow the provincial and federal guidelines for it,” he said. Lawlor added that residents are not allowed to slaughter their chickens within the city limits.
