The tree was on a property owned by Christine and Jeremy Ackwood. “Our neighbor had spotted someone in our backyard in the middle of the night and had a remote control,” Christine explained. “He was not sure what was happening.” It was then that things became very interesting. The stranger in the yard was terrified by Ackwood’s neighbor and it was then that the stranger lost control of the drone and fell into the big trees in Ackwood ‘s backyard. The pilot then screwed the drone, jumping on a waiting vehicle and taking off. At the time, Ackwood’s was actually away on a trip to Las Vegas. Jeremy Akwood says they only found out after being contacted by police. “We were not sure if they had done it before. The police never told us that, but we were curious if they knew – if they knew we were far away,” he said. The Lambton OPP believes the drone and weapons traveled along the St. Louis River. Clair from the United States, ending up in Ackwood property near Port Lambton, Ont. “You know, between Canada and the United States, and the various law enforcement agencies, they have to deal with that,” said Chris Lewis, CTV public security analyst and former OPP commissioner. “Because, let’s face it, there could be a lot more dangerous things than guns going back and forth if they wanted to.” The drones have been used for other illegal activities. In December 2020, the Middlesex OPP and London police prevented a drug smuggling attempt at the Elgin-Middlesex detention center. Lewis cites other similar examples, saying: “Even Kingston pens [penitentiary] he had some attempts at it and so, you know, it will get worse before it gets better. “ The Lambton OPP says the investigation is ongoing.
