From 1 May, thousands of Britons in Spain will no longer be able to use UK driving licenses on Spanish roads – although tourists will be exempt from the ban. The new restrictions will come into force after the British and Spanish governments failed to reach a consensus on permits issued by the DVLA by the April 30 deadline, with Tory MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith pointing the finger at European authorities. “It’s a case of ‘tomorrow, tomorrow.’ [tomorrow, tomorrow]He told The Mail on Sunday. “It’s time for them to point the finger and do what they agreed.” Until May 1, Britons living in Spain could use their DVLA licenses to drive, but now they could face chaos for weeks as alternative measures are sought. Meanwhile, every other European nation has agreed on a post-Brexit protocol on British driving licenses. A British government source said: “This could go on for a week or it could take longer. It should be temporary, but we do not know how temporary. “In the meantime, British people living in Spanish mountain villages will not be able to drive.” A Foreign Ministry spokesman added: “An agreement has not yet been reached on the exchange of UK driving licenses with Spanish licenses. “As of 1 May, UK license holders residing in Spain for more than six months and have not changed their license during the transitional period will no longer be able to drive legally in Spain. “We have agreed to speed up the talks quickly and urge the Spanish government to move forward with interim measures.” Anyone affected by the ban is advised to take immediate action to apply for a Spanish license, which will include both a theoretical and a practical test. The change does not apply to holidaymakers, who can still use British driving licenses while in the country. Spain, meanwhile, continues to crack down on anti-social behavior through a decision limiting holidaymakers to six spirits a day in hotels in Ibiza and Mallorca, with guests having to pay extra if they want more. The official guidance on the UK Government’s website for British expatriates in Spain states: “If you have a valid UK driving license:
From 1 May 2022, if you lived in Spain before 1 January 2021, your valid driving license in the United Kingdom will no longer be valid for driving in Spain. If you moved to Spain after 1 January 2021, your valid leave in the United Kingdom will be recognized for 6 months from the date of your stay. “
