The prime minister refused to appear on the show when presented by Piers Morgan, even hiding in a refrigerator to avoid the presenter’s questions in 2019. But now he has agreed in a sedentary interview with host Susanna Reid live from Downing Street 10 on Tuesday morning. Reid’s fellow presenter, Kate Garraway, announced the interview on Monday, saying that “1,790 days, almost five years, have passed since [the PM] he last spoke on this show. ” The prime minister’s press secretary was heard swearing after Good Morning Britain news correspondent Jonathan Swain asked Johnson for an interview during a pre-dawn visit to Modern Milkman, a dairy company in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, in December 2019. Johnson was also accused of avoiding Ranvir Singh, the political editor of the morning show, at last year’s Conservative Party congress in Manchester. He raised his hands and left as she said: “Prime Minister, Good Morning Britain would like to have you on the show. “1,500 days have passed, Prime Minister, since you are on the show.” Morgan welcomed the announcement, writing on Twitter: “It’s out of the fridge! If you do Boris Johnson’s tour – you know where to find me. “ The prime minister last interviewed on the show in 2017 when he was foreign minister. Reid and Morgan have accused the government of boycotting the show during the pandemic. In November 2020, in an article for i, Reid said: “I think the government refuses to put ministers on the show because they do not want to be strongly challenged.” The 201-day government injustice ended days after the departure of Johnson’s aides, Dominic Cummings and Lee Kane. The prime minister’s attitude towards Morgan also seems to have softened since then. During a recent talk show on TalkTV, where Morgan hosts an evening show, he told presenter Tom Newton Dunn: “We love Piers and I’m sure he will do a great job as well.”
