Disturbing photos were shown of a former music teacher dressed as a clown and in Harry Potter-themed pajamas – as he and his friend both admit to having sexually abused children. Benjamin Heels, 33 – who has worked on several music productions in Southeast Melbourne, including Priscilla Queen of the Desert – pleaded guilty to a string of 35 offenses on Friday. The list of allegations made by the Heels, seen by the Daily Mail Australia, includes sexual activity in the presence of a child under the age of 16, intentional sexual intercourse with a child and production of child abuse material. Heels allegedly appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link, with court documents stating that his offense occurred over a period of four and a half months, between January 1 and May 14, 2021. They included the possession and transmission of child abuse material and the supply of a child for sexual activity. The court heard that Cullinan-Smayle’s insult went up in December 2017, when at the age of 28 he used a transportation service to buy a child to engage in sexual activity. The couple was the subject of temporary non-publication court orders that prevented the disclosure of their identity, but also to save them from “embarrassment”, the orders said. Both orders have expired. The case was first reported by the Herald-Sun. Heels was arrested on May 26, 2021 in the Berwick suburb of Melbourne, where he was arrested with child abuse material on an electronic device. The court heard that Heels produced child abuse material at the site between January 1 and May 20 – six days before his arrest. He had previously worked at Fountain Gate Secondary College as a music teacher and had participated in many amateur community stage productions. In June 2020, Heels said that listening to children sing songs about sex made him “uncomfortable.” “Parents, make sure you send your kids to a voice coach who understands their voice,” he wrote. “You call me old-fashioned, but I shudder and feel so uncomfortable listening to children sing songs about sex.” Heels and Cullinan-Smayle will appear in County Court later this month.
