The monthly totals have been summed up to give a bleak picture of how common vehicle theft has become in Mississauga and Brampton. According to Peel police crime data, more than 1,600 vehicles have been stolen so far in 2022, including 413 vehicles recently stolen between March 30 and April 28. The map below shows where the 413 recent vehicle thefts took place: Of these 1,600+ in total, it is reported that at least 705 of the vehicle thefts took place in Mississauga, while at least 655 in Brampton (approximate numbers). While most of these incidents have been reported as car thefts, other types of vehicles – including motorcycles and trucks – have also been targeted. In early April, police busted a car theft ring operating in the Toronto, Peel and Halton areas for several months. Three men from Brampton and one from Mississauga are now facing charges following a multi-jurisdictional police investigation that led to the recovery of 20 stolen vehicles worth $ 1.5 million. In response to high vehicle theft rates, the Peel Police Services Council presented a proposal on Friday (April 29th) to “explore options to reduce car theft in Peel”. Introduced by Chairman of the Board Ron Chatha, and with the unanimous support of the Board, the Police Services Council and the Peel Regional Police are expected to bring to the table their federal, provincial and private partners in tackling car theft at every step. “The issue of car theft is at the heart of many members of the community,” said Ron Chatha, chairman of the board. “As a Board of Directors, we want the community to know how seriously we take this issue and that we want to do everything in our power to tackle car theft.” At this time, residents are advised to keep their vehicles safe with the following tips: Keep car doors locked and windows closed, provide adequate lighting in the area of roads and entrances, and park vehicles in a locked garage if possible . Other tips include:
