The 27-year-old, who is not named, was hit by a marked police vehicle in Peacehaven, East Sussex. He died on the spot despite the efforts of paramedics and staff, according to police. The collision took place near the junction of Dorothy Avenue shortly after 23.10 on Saturday night. Sussex police said they referred the incident to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), which will conduct an independent investigation. “This is a tragic incident and we fully support the IOPC investigation,” said Inspector Jo Banks. Police ask anyone with information or video from the incident camera to contact them. According to statistics released by the IOPC, there were 471 deaths as a result of traffic accidents involving police between 2004 and 2020, of which 18 involved Sussex police. People between the ages of 21 and 30 were more likely to be killed than any other age group. The majority of deaths are related to persecution. Sussex police did not say if the man was being chased or if the patrol car was responding to an emergency at the time.
